RLSLOG update: cleaning inactive links!

Hey guys, I am sure you know the feeling when you look for some download link just to finally find it and realize, the file has been deleted and you can’t use the link anymore.

I know this very well and that’s why I decided to code a small script to find all download links posted in comments under RLSLOG articles, check if they are still working and eventually delete the inactive ones. We will start with Rapidshare.com and I will later adjust the script for other filehosting services as well. I was really surprised by the results, even some links posted today are already deleted/blocked.

We are currently in the process of cleaning our database from those links, it will take some time (we have over 1.5 million comments!), but I believe this addition will improve your user experience with world’s first and still most visited release blog!

Comments

Feel free to post your RLSLOG update: cleaning inactive links! torrent, subtitles, samples, free download, quality, NFO, rapidshare, depositfiles, uploaded.net, rapidgator, filefactory, netload, crack, serial, keygen, requirements or whatever-related comments here. Don't be rude (permban), use only English, don't go offtopic and read FAQ before asking a question. Owners of this website aren't responsible for content of comments.

now all you have to do is clean up those gunggo ads that navigate away and completely ruin the rlslog experience for some.

    Good idea.

Surely there has to be a bit of an automatic script that can do this automatically.

I myself use firefox combined with userscripts http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/9467

They literally turn good links green, and bad links red. – Saves a LOT of time when your searching for old films and games.

@1 Exactly! Fix these annoying adds that make your site unnavigable. Thats the real problem.

This is an excellent idea. Indeed, some links become inactive at an alarming rate. That is why if I want to download something I always start with THE LAST link in the comments section. Also FileServe link do not get deleted in my experience, as opposed to those on HotFile and RapidShare.

its so easy to avoid this ;) just copy the page to clipboard ( like http://diletante.com/rlslog-update-cleaning-inactive-links/#comments ) and let jdownloader do the rest :D

but its still a good thing that you update it :)

not to complain (i love rlslog!) but being able to add some parameters to the search function would be a lot nicer!

    thx anyways :)

Quit complaining about the ads, it’s how rlslog can make money to still be here. If they are so bad, use ad block plus?

Also, good job with the automatic dead link removal.

everyone should move to .dlc containers to protect their links.

good idea to get rid of dead links but we still have the problem of anyone ever going back and reupping that material

  22. James

The ads are killing the site for me. I understand you need ads but it almost renders the site unusable as some ads don’t give you an option to go back to rlslog.net. Fine with ads but stop killing the site.

Great idea as Megaupload and Fileserve have been disabling links as fast as the material is upoaded lately. Fileserv especially is a problem as it keep the links but just deletes the material which fools userscripts and greasemonkey into thinking the link is still valid.

    p.s.
Thanks to comment #2 by James A. I had never heard of userscripts before and have just installed it. Takes ages to check a page with as many links as rlslog, but well worth it for the main download hosta such as megaupload, rapidshare and hotfile.

The work in cleaning past dead links from the comment section by rlslog is much appreciated here. I hope that when its done you will automate it so that they are removed regularly. Ideally it should just check the links every 12 hours (for example) and just those posted IN the last 12 hours, thus generally keeping recent links up-to-date, then perhaps once a month doing a full check of ALL links for validity. Dont know if that can be done but would be a good idea in principle i think.

    Great idea Martin!!

It would also help if people renamed the file name in their links so as not to get deleted so soon, i know i always do!!

As for the ads, i use AdMuncher and never get bothered by ads :)

Any1 who dont like the ads and especially those annoying redirects on this or any other site can easily protect themselves with a variety of apps, most of which have cracked versions reviewed on this site, I personally use malwarebytes anti-malware which has a real time protection function which includes website blocking, it updates it’s list of sites it needs to block regularly so I dont see any redirects from this or any other site on the web since I installed it. I also believe the new version of avast AV PRO, (cracked version also reviewed on rlslog) has a website blocking version and I find that with both running I am able to surf any site I want safely without my browser being hijacked and running bogus scans or other adverts. Occasionally a site like rlslog itself gets blocked but I can allow individual IPs in order to view any site I know to be reasonably safe and still be safe from being redirected to ads or w/e.
To sum it up, install malwarebytes and the site still gets paid for hosting the ads but you no longer need to put up with watching them to get to the content you want :)

BTW, cleaning up the links, A+ idea, add megaupload to the list as well pls, they do seem to take a lot of links down very soon after they are posted.

    November 1st, 2010 | 18:19

some of you still believe that renaming files helps with anything?
it does not, first is checksum, then there are people who search through sites like this and reports all links from topic, no matter if the link leads to copyrighted material or not, they simply does not check it

    November 1st, 2010 | 18:20

    Finally something useful.

On a side note – if you are already allowing yourself to drop below and post ads directly among other, proper stuff, instead of placing them onto left/right areas at least have decency to allow comments. Otherwise you should lock this post, too.

Honestly if you need more self approval/ego boost then looking at the visitor count you need to stop and think for a moment.

ads are fine but the ads that redirect to another page one after the other are HORRIBLE! adblocker…. we shouldn’t have to use that and besides what do you have for chrome or IE that will work on those types of ads? great site aside from the annoying redirecting lately.

Here here, I second the banhammer coming down on Gunggo. They ruin the site when I try navigating with my iPhone 4 and iPad. I can handle them on my Macbook Pro, but I staunchly, no, vociferously argue against having them. Goodbye Gunggo and good riddance. If I don’t see the back of you ever again it’ll be a good day.

How about a script to remove all the spam for stuff like shoes that pops up in the comments.

secondly i resume you’re being ironic in some way when you act surprised that links posted as early as today have been taken down! if the links are to illegal material (eg films, music, software), then its natural to assume that the MPAA are watching this site and trying to kill links to any copyrighted material. doh

And i agree with the other people here, ads taking over the full screen are just terrible.
they might give you a profit boost short term but on the long run you will lose a lot of visiters.

Also i hope you find a way to get rid of all the spam posters some day

    keep it up!

  49. Jessica

its pointless to use the script with rapidshare first. This just shows Martin doesnt even look at the comments. Uploaders have been boycotting Rapidshare for months. You wont see RS links in any recent posts. Older posts – probably everything is dead anyways so in that case it doesnt matter.

If you want to be useful make the script work for Hotfile / Fileserve etc first.

Yeah, I miss that. I think that it would be a good idea to divide comments into “comments/opinions” and “alternative links”.

On side note, anybody else is experiencing this strange bug that when you click with middle mouse button on any link on rlslog it opens in the same tab instead in new?
I have Firefox 3.6 and on every other page middle button works fine.

I would try to use JDownloader to check the links – it has support for many servers, so it would be universal in a way. And I would also just made those invalid links grey or something, not delete the entire comment (for example when there are links for more then one server and some of them work and some others do not).

My biggest issue about RLSLOG.net links is when they are initally put in the original posting (not the comments later on). The “NTi” torrent links go to a “not found” search on newtorrents.info about half the time, which can stay in that state for hours, days or sometimes forever!

Another issue is that the original poster’s NTi links are often wrong (e.g. a typo or lazily pasted from a recent totally unrelated previous posting). Sort out those NTi links will you – have them unlinked until they actually find a valid search (and not those disgraceful 3 faked “External search results” which RLSlog should be ashamed of).

this is “offtopic” i have things to say but won’t be repeating others: rs is old/links die faster than my farts’ smells/search fct needs sophistication”/separate comments into links and opinions-discussion

also, I bought megaupload premium and thank very much all those uploading MU links, i think its good value for money..

but what makes me bother write a comment is that i was fascinated to read that people can’t open your links in a new tab using the middle mouse button.. i’m using a netbook and have the “same”problem, that is i wanna open a link in a new tab so i hold down ctrl and click it normally with the mousepad and it fails too, just opens in same tab.

can we please find out more about this somehow?

The problem with this is, all of the deleted links will be deleted asap on new posts, and the anti-pirate agencies will only see the 10 working links out 100 links (for example) and they know exactly which ones to report more easily. Making their job easier for them ;p
also ensuring whatever links still work are deleted quicker too. sucks.
Well I hope this isnt affecting newer links, only old ones (they not reporting links really anymore after a few days of release out)

  93. Cyril

My question is will this script remove the complete post or will it somehow edit the post and only remove the bad link?

probably the reason they’re deleting rapidshare first is cuz that’s what people USED to use a lot, so all the old posts are the ones that are mainly all dead links. You’ll note one of the things in the original article was about removing garbage from their site database – so doing rapidshare first will probably get the most done at once.

Hopefully they have something that goes back and double checks ones it’s marked as bad and restores them if they’re good. Otherwise, say rapidshare goes down for a short time, all rapidshare links lost forever.

Thanks for doing this – makes the site so much better.

Maybe later on you could schedule this with cron?

Also, anyone know of a script for checking links that works in Chrome? The one above didn’t seem to :(

    u r the best.

    @ all the add-complainers:

    JUST USE OPERA.
    block all ads.
    it is simple like that.

Opera always has been the most efficient browser.
    you will see.

Cool move on cleaning the site.. and also, I agree with #1 with the ads.. I don’t mind waiting for 8 seconds but I don’t like to have to click the back button because of the error after the 8 seconds ads and sometime after I click the back button the 8 seconds ads are reactivated.. :( Although this site is #1 for me, but all those errors and hassles makes me want to go to egy instead..

Who cares about ANY filehost links? Give us back the NZB searches and/or host your own NZB files.

The “Gunggo” page hijack ads on every page must go.

Get rid of all the additional download links other people post. They are piggybacking off the backs of the original posters.
The “comments” section should be exactly that – COMMENTS about the post / wuality etc.
This site used to be my first stop but not anymore because of this.

Cleaning up those invalid/dead links is a great idea & you could do away with those gunggo ads too…Otherwise its a great site for its usual fast releases. Hats off to you guys!!!
It’s a bit offtopic but you could organise games links too..I recommend you make sub-sections under main Games section like
“Small Releases” – links for casual, timepass or other small budget games like Luxor,time-management games, etc…
    “Semi-releases”(Optional) like Create, Railworks 2,
    & lastly
“Big/Official Release” section for those AAA or AA titles like Need for speed, Call of duty, Dragon Age, Harry Potter…etc i think you got it…It would be great…
